Today, US astronauts sail across the vast expanse of space wearing spacesuits designed in the 1990s. They are large suits, equipped with numerous. They are extremely uncomfortable to move around in and perform even basic actions. The heavy weight and lack of flexibility preclude the ability to perform tasks quickly and efficiently.
SpaceX revolutionised “space” fashion. They did not just send their crews in beautiful suits, but also as practical as possible. They do not go into outer space, but the idea is worth noting. NASA looked at it and decided on a number of upgrades, including the outfitting of astronauts. Two private companies Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace were engaged to develop a new “wardrobe”.
In 2012, an experimental space suit was unveiled to replace an outdated suit. From the moment it was unveiled, the public couldn’t stop marvelling. The development was an almost exact replica of the suit worn by Buzz Lightyear, the hero of the legendary animated film Toy Story.
Both spacesuits were similar in shape and colour. Of course, there were some differences. However, fans of the cartoon immediately determined that the creators of the suit were inspired by Buzz’s appearance. But the design had its shortcomings, which made it not the best option.
The creation of the suit took place at a time when it was not thoroughly known where the astronauts would first go. The path lay as much in the direction of the Moon as on Mars. The option of conquering another planet was not excluded. So the developers set themselves the goal of creating a suit which would be most comfortable and convenient.
The Z-1 prototype was noted for its increased flexibility due to its numerous movable parts. Each astronaut was able to bend his or her elbows, flex and get to his or her feet faster during a fall. In addition, the range of activities was expanded considerably.
The use of practical, high-quality materials was an added advantage. It was characterized by the polyester shell. It ensured that the suit retained its shape. There was also a layer made of various composite materials. It was responsible for protection against temperature jumps.
Another feature of the suit was the universal port. It was placed in the back. Through this port, the astronaut was able to connect to the spacecraft’s systems. He could also use it to connect the oxygen supply system.
Although the Z-1 did win the hearts of astronomers, it had many disadvantages. In particular, it had some problems with tightness. Such a disadvantage is a deadly threat in outer space or on another planet. The developers decided not to deal with this problem and simply created a new version. It was called the Z-2.
The novelty was introduced in 2014. The spacesuit is a vast improvement over its predecessor. It is flexible and sealed, allowing more freedom for the astronauts when carrying out their missions. Funnily enough, its design is also quite amusing.
The Z-2 prototype is designed in grey tones with turquoise lighting. The distinctive shape allows for bending arms and legs, moving agilely across surfaces and rising easily when dropped. It is currently being refined, but may soon become the main suit for astronauts.
